Role in the project

GEM will act as coordinator of the project and will manage the involvement of the partners and their cooperation. GEM will assure the achievement of the Milestones of each WP. Within INPHOMIR, GEM will fulfil double role functions: the R&D PRANS unit (Photonics Research & Applied Navigation Sciences Laboratory) will be devoted to the scientific investigation activities (simulations and design of PIC devices; characterisation of advanced fibre-coupled or free-space coupled devices; design and assembly of the electronic/mechanic control unit for the miniaturised gyro and lidar sensors, development of the software-control, characterisation of the inertial and ranging performance) while the EOS unit (Electro-Optical Systems Lab.) will carry out the benchmark definition and sensor-unit industrial validation activities.

Polytechnic University of Bari

Polytechnic University of Bari (POLIBA) is a leading institution for studying engineering and architecture in Italy. POLIBA has been involved in different European and national research projects both as a lead partner and as a project partner and, in particular, it is very active in developing partnerships with the industry. Optoelectronics Laboratory at POLIBA has a well-recognized expertise on modeling, design, fabrication and characterization of photonic waveguiding devices at micro- and nano-scale for a wide range of applications.

Role in the project

Optoelectronics Laboratory at POLIBA works on photonic gyros since more than 20 years and has a well-recognized experience on this topic and on the more general field of Photonics in Space. POLIBA will lead WP2 and WP5, taking parts also to the other WPs. The theoretical know-how and design and testing capability of photonic devices of POLIBA will be combined with the manufacturing and technology expertise of TU/e and TUM, fulfilling all the know-how required for the development of the configurations proposed.

Eindhoven University of Technology

The Photonic Integration research group at TU/e has an established expertise in the creation of monolithic and heterogeneous PICs which exploit the InP material system. TU/e coordinates two international PIC pilot line programs (JePPIX and OIP4NWE) to drive the manufacturability of InP PICs using the open foundry
model. The key competencies include: tolerance-aware design, precision end-to-end fabrication, automation of test and characterization to close the design loop.

Role in the project

The role of TU/e within INPHOMIR will begin with creation of basic building block for new ultralow-loss InP waveguide, while retaining the full integration compliance with existing active components. Furthermore, TU/e will create a new passive component library for directional couplers, ultralong (beyond 10 m) loss-compensated and low-crosstalk spirals. TU/e researchers will assist the partners in designing and operating prototypes in test-beds. Finally TU/e will assist with defining a viable industrialization and manufacturing strategy using experience from InPulse and OIP4NWE, and with technology roadmaps preparation and co-promotion of outcomes through JePPIX.

Technical University of Munich

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of Europe’s top universities. Project research will be performed in the Walter Schottky Institute (WSI), a central institute of TUM, founded in 1988 to strengthen the interaction between basic physics and semiconductor electronics research.

Role in the project

TUM will lead the effort to design, grow, fabricate, and integrate continuous-wave semiconductor lasers and detectors operating in mid-infrared wavelengths with passive photonic waveguides for photonic integrated circuits. TUM team will also lead the effort to minimize optical losses in the MIR passive waveguides on InP materials platform and contribute to mid-infrared characterization of processed PIC devices.

University College Cork – National University of Ireland

International collaborations with industry & academia. Recognized ability to convert research results generated in the laboratory to commercialization. Leading the world’s first open-access packaging PIlotline, PIXAPP. Participation at and extensive experience in management European projects, especially H2020.

Role in the project

UCC will contribute to the consortium with established capabilities in full packaging solutions, including: fibre optical packaging, micro-optical assembly, semi-and fully-automatic flip-chip bonding and ribbon wire-bonding. The group supports multiple industrial sectors, with particularly strong collaborations in the areas of communications, medical devices and sensors.

ENDUROSAT

Founded in Bulgaria in 2015, ENDUROSAT AD is one of the fastest growing space companies in Europe. ENDUROSAT AD designs, builds and operates high-end NanoSats and provides solutions for the Global space market.

Role in the project

ENDUROSAT AD will be an end-user of the proposed technology. It will define the requirements, test the new sensor-unit in its facilities and evaluate the applicability in low-orbit mission scenarios.

SIGMA Ingegneria

SIGMA designs, produces and qualifies machinery for the industrial, aerospace, defense and research fields. SIGMA has developed aerial and terrestrial robotic platforms. Competences: design and test of the control part of the drones working with sensors and AI algorithms, development of general and structural
configuration of aerial systems, assembly and testing of the drones.

Role in the project

SIGMA, as end-user, will define the requirements and evaluate different application scenarios of the new technology. It will then take care of integrating the sensors on its drones and planning and executing flight test missions, subsequently carrying out data and performance analysis. SIGMA has high experience in sensors integration and in the complete systems development.
